In other words, you can think of the video mode option as a separate setting along side the other options such as local dimming or contrast in the sense that changing one doesn't necessarily change the other with the exception of brightness and dynamic range. It's also worth mentioning that you can still reduce either brightness and dynamic range while in HDR mode although that would reduce the effect and hence would be counter-intuitive.

The following settings are suitable for any content, from watching movies to TV shows and gaming. Note that here the 'Brightness' is the equivalent of what other companies call 'Backlight'. The 'Brightness' can be changed to match your room lighting, and it won't affect the picture quality. We left the 'Contrast' to 90, the 'Gamma' to 0, and the 'Black level' to 50, their default values. The 'Black adjust' and 'Adv. Note that for the calibration, we turned off the 'Auto local dimming' and 'X-tended Dynamic Range', but you should turn on these features for normal TV and movie viewing.
In the 'Color' tab, we left at the default value of 50 for 'Color' and 0 for 'Hue'. We selected 'Expert 1' for the 'Color temperature' as this is the closest to the warm temperature of K we are trying to achieve during calibration.
If you find the color temperature to be too warm reddish or yellowish you can set it to a colder temperature. In the 'Clarity' tab, we left 'Sharpness' to 50 the default value since we did not want to have any oversharpness. It could be turned on if you are watching some older content with a lower resolution since it can help to improve the quality of the image.
You can adjust with the 'Resolution' slider how much effect you want to be added. The 'Mastered in 4K' option is a feature that will optimize the upscaling of p Blu-rays movies that are listed as being 'Mastered in 4K'.
It will not be possible to apply this setting if you are not watching a movie through other means than via a Blu-ray player, so in our case, we did not use this feature.
The 'Clearness' slider controls the image flicker control of the TV. To know more about this feature you can click here. This doesn't add any soap opera effect. When HDR content is detected the TV should switch automatically to the good settings, but if you want to be sure you can verify that the 'Brightness' is set to max, that ' Auto local dimming' is set to 'High' and that 'X-tended Dynamic Range' is set to 'High'. The following are the results of the white balance and colorspace calibration on our unit.
They are provided for reference, and should not be copied as the calibration values vary per individual unit even for the same model and same size as the TV we reviewed due to manufacturing tolerances.
If you want to try them you will need to enter all values shown, as all of them are active at the same time. If you end up with worse picture quality, simply reset them to the default values. This 'Scene Select' gave us the more control over all the picture settings. We set the ' Contrast ' to ' MAX ' for our calibration process since it did not cause issues like clipping in the white and it could give us a better result overall. We selected the ' Expert 1 ' ' Color Temperature ' since it was the color temperature that was the closest to our calibration target, but you can change for a colder color temperature if you feel the picture get too red or too yellowish.
The ' CineMotion ' was left ' O ff' during our testing, and we found that even when off, 24p movies playing over 24p sources were always displayed at the good cadence. In any case, if you are sensitive to judder, you could set the ' CineMotion ' to ' Auto ', and it should not cause any problem. Both options can be turned on to a different level, and it is up to you to adjust the level until you find the right one for the best picture quality.
For our review process, we did not turn on this feature, but if you like the soap opera effect or if you want to clear up and reduce motion blur, you will need to set the option to ' Custom '.
When the ' Motionflow ' option is set to ' Custom ', you will have two available options. If you like the soap opera effectthis is the one that you will adjust to your liking. Note that when clearness is applied, the screen will dim considerably though. In the ' Advanced settings ', we left turned ' Off ' ' Adv.
Contrast Enhancer ', ' Black adjust ' and ' Live Color ' since we did not want to change the original look of the video content playing and leave true as what the content creator intended. Here, all of those four options can help adjust the contrast of the picture and the level of detail in the shadow.
If you find the picture quality to be too dark, or if you do not see enough detail in the dark area of the screen, each of those options can be useful to tweak the picture quality to your liking.
But once again, remember that those options will add some image processing and will often change the original look of the video content that you are watching. Note that we also found out that the most accurate color temperature in HDR was ' Expert 2 '.

No one ;? NovumVeritas Member.Settings Unit-to-unit sample variations, the viewing environment, and the source might render these recommendations less than optimum. They are only provided as a potentially useful starting place, were determined in a dark or semi-dark room.
The settings here that are most likely to translate reliably from one sample to another are those involving specific features with only a few selections, such as Gamma and Noise Reduction. The ones most likely to be subject to sample variations are video controls offering a wide range of adjustment, such as white balance grayscale and color management where available.
Even relatively small differences in the common control settings, such as Contrast, Black level, and Gamma, can shift the white balance, though the resulting visible change may be minor. Production tolerances can do the same. We strongly recommend that you find the optimum basic video settings for your sample by using one of the many available display setup discs, such as DVE HD Basics Blu-ray.

Experimenting with the more complex color calibration and other controls in the user menus will do no harm; the changes may be easily reset. But adjusting these by eye is unlikely to produce an accurate result and is no substitute for a full calibration.
Yes, good point, hk. I don't think it's the off-axis viewing because the reviewer equates it to an issue with the technology. Sony will be coming out with a replacement model for the Z9D in the fall. However, the XF is a great value for the picture quality level.
